Non-UPF Verification evaluates products based on rigorous criteria designed to ensure minimal processing and ingredient integrity:

  • Prohibited Processing Methods

    Certain industrial processing techniques are not permitted, including high-heat extrusion and other methods that significantly alter food structure and nutritional value. Knowledge of all processing methods used is required for product and ingredient evaluation.

  • Prohibited Ingredients

    An extensive list of prohibited ingredients ensures products are free from artificial flavors, certain preservatives, highly refined substances, and industrial additives commonly found in ultra-processed foods.

  • Added Sugar Limits

    Restrictions on added sugars help ensure products maintain nutritional integrity and aren't designed to override natural satiety signals.

What Products Qualify?

Products that typically qualify for Non-UPF Verification include:

  • Foods made with simple, recognizable ingredients
  • Products using minimal processing techniques
  • Items free from artificial colors, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives
  • Foods without hydrogenated oils or highly refined ingredients
  • Products that prioritize whole food ingredients over industrial formulations 

Eligible Products

Non-UPF Verification is available exclusively for human food products, including:

Note: Produce, supplements, vitamins, body care products, household products, pet food, animal feed, and alcoholic beverages are not eligible for this verification. 

  1. Request Verification 

    Submit initial documentation for your product(s) so that we can determine the scope of the evaluation. We'll then provide a quote for verification services for your approval. 

  2. Audit 

    Our technical staff collects and conducts a comprehensive review of your formulations, ingredient sourcing, and processing details. We may request supplementary documentation or ingredient specifications to verify compliance with the Non-UPF Standard criteria. All audits are conducted virtually initially. 

  3. Report 

    We prepare a report detailing the outcome of the audit. If any nonconformities are identified, SCS can advise on corrective actions required before verification can be completed.

  4. Verification 

    Once your products successfully meet all Non-UPF requirements, you are issued a certificate of compliance valid for one year and are permitted to use the "Non-UPF Verified" seal on product packaging per the Non-UPF Standard’s licensing agreement. 

  5. Renewal 

    Annual evaluation is required to maintain Non-UPF Verified status.
