What is Product Carbon Footprint Verification ?
Product carbon footprints (PCFs) provide valuable environmental information about products; however a self-assessment is not always sufficiently transparent for customers. SCS’ third-party PCF Verification adds a level of assurance to a product carbon footprint calculated by its clients. Obtaining this verification adds a layer of trust and transparency to the carbon footprint that a self-claim cannot achieve. When making improvements to the product, this service can help highlight footprint reduction achievement.
Product carbon footprint verification is ideal for product producers that have environmental commitments and want a third-party verification of their carbon footprint for communication purposes or to check their calculations for internal purposes.
To verify an organization’s PCF, SCS first ensures that the carbon footprint calculated by the client is developed in alignment with the ISO 14067 (carbon footprint of products). Then, SCS follows ISO 14064-3 to verify the calculation through supportive evidence of primary data, re-calculate hotspots, evaluate the emission factors used and more. As SCS requires reports to be done in alignment with ISO 14067 and the model information, it’s important for clients to have familiarity with this standard.
